September 30, 2009 was no ordinary day. It was the day that 34 year old Tiger Woods became the first billionaire sportsman. This is second "first" for the darling of golf, who in 2002 became the world's highest paid sportsman when he earned more than Michael Schumacher, the darling of Formula 1 racing. Thanks to endorsement deals, sponsorships and his success at golf, a young Tiger Woods has reached the $1 billion dollar mark. As reported by Forbes magazine, the $10 million dollar bonus that Tiger received for winning the recent FedEx Cup was what catapulted him to this level. The other money earning project that has put Tiger in this field is that of lending his name to and designing golf courses. Currently he has three courses under development and reportedly earning $10 million for each one. Nike is Tiger's biggest money-earner. Nike sells golf products branded with Tiger's name, sales which come out to more than $800 million a year. Even with recent knee injury and surgery Tiger has been able to maintain his earnings and claims that it is not "greed for money but lust for glory" that drives him on. How He Gets Paid By endorsing the following brands, Tiger earns almost a $100 million dollars a year: Nike: $30 million Accenture Management Consultants: $20 million Gilette: $15 million Gatorade: $1 million Electronic Arts (video games): $8 million TAG Heuer: $5million TAG has made a special watch called the Professional Golf Watch that Tiger wears. The description of this watch as found on the TAG website says its "the first watch for golf professionals, developed and worn by Tiger Woods. It has been specially designed to meet golfers' special requirements. Its high-tech materials and carefully studied ergonomic design means that the TAG Heuer professional golf watch will never bother a golfer during the swing." Part of the terms of agreement that Tiger has with TAG Heuer is to also make personal appearances on behalf of the watch brand, in addition to wearing TAG watches. The lucky winner in a recent contest sponsored by TAG Heuer, will get to play golf with Tiger Woods. "I was just thrilled to find out I had won. It is one of those once in a lifetime things," said Adam LeBoeuf, a jewelry retailer from Barrie, Canada. He is one of four people who will get to play with Woods. Although he hasn't been officially informed and where and when he and Woods will hit gold course, he expects that Woods will wait until the end of the PGA season and since Woods lives in Orlando, FL, perhaps LeBoeuf will be headed south soon enough. The round of golf is definitely taking place since reps from TAG Heuer have already shipped him a Nike titanium driver and a snazzy golf bag. Next up? A nice TAG watch as well. What a lucky guy! Next up? A chance to win the opportunity to train in the desert with TAG Heuer spokeswoman Maria Sharapova! Check out http://www.tagheuer.com/ for details. |
